Merge first, craft second

Two systems share the word craft. Merging two copies of an item raises its rarity and costs no recipe. The workbench turns named parts into something that does not drop. The 1.0 notes say the recipe list sorts by what you can make right now and shows which ingredient or rarity you still lack. Hammer, also new in 1.0, upgrades all marked items by one rarity at the end of the day, and it cannot jump past the hammer’s own rarity. Lottery Ticket can reroll, repair, or skip a material cost, dies if you die, and can bring you back once.

What 1.0 named, without inventing parts

Five weapons are craft-only in the 1.0 notes: Flamethrower, Desert Eagle, Mega Shotgun, Crossbow, and The Grinder. Plasma Hand is a craft-only item, not a weapon. Crafted Uzi is Rare, where it used to be Uncommon. A 1.0 wiki adds one explicit pair: Spiked Bat “Lucy” is Nail plus Bandage, and Uzi comes from weapon parts. I do not fill the five craft-only rows with guessed parts.

Questions

Are recipes random?

The community crafting guide describes fixed recipes rather than random recipes (1 community source). Drops are a separate system. The 1.0 workbench sorts by what you can build and shows the missing parts.

Can I craft at the base?

Yes. The workbench is a base feature. Merging duplicates happens in the backpack and does not spend those recipe parts.

How do I craft a legendary?

Two different answers exist. Merge copies of the same item to raise rarity, or follow a workbench recipe. I do not treat those as the same button.
